CASE STUDY: Transforming a Closed-Off Kitchen into a Bright, Open Space

At C. DePina Kitchens + Interiors, we believe a well-designed kitchen is the heart of the home. A few years ago, we had the opportunity to transform a dated, closed-off kitchen into a stunning, light-filled space by removing walls, modernizing finishes, and enhancing natural light. Here’s how we did it.

The Challenge

The original kitchen was confined and separated from the dining room by walls that made the space feel small and dark. The hardwood floors throughout the home were outdated, and the stairway flooring and balusters needed a fresh, modern update. Additionally, the kitchen window was narrow, limiting the natural light entering the space.

The Design Solution

To create a more open, airy feel, we removed the dining room walls, seamlessly integrating the kitchen and dining areas into one cohesive space. By widening the kitchen window, we allowed more natural light to flood the room, instantly brightening the entire area.

We installed brand-new hardwood flooring throughout to provide warmth and continuity. The stairway was completely updated with new flooring and modern balusters, enhancing the home’s overall aesthetic.

For the kitchen, we selected two fresh tones of cabinetry, artisan shaped subway backsplash tile, and a functional layout that maximized storage and efficiency. Light-toned finishes and carefully selected materials reflected and enhanced the natural light, creating a fresh and timeless space.

The Final Result

The transformation was remarkable. What was once a dark, confined kitchen became an open, inviting space where the family could cook, dine, and entertain effortlessly. The combination of new hardwood floors, a widened window, and modern finishes gave the home a sophisticated yet welcoming feel.

Why It Matters

This project showcases the power of thoughtful design in improving not just aesthetics but also functionality and the overall experience of a home. By removing barriers, enhancing lighting, and updating key features, we created a kitchen that feels more spacious, modern, and perfect for everyday living.
